Since 2024, at the direct request of Kruger’s Head Ranger, every field ranger in the Kruger National Park — over 460 in total — carries a Sigfox GPS panic button that works anywhere across the 2 million hectares they protect. Pilots, K9 handlers, scientific services staff and field guides in poaching hotspots carry the same device.
A panic-button press triggers a WhatsApp alert with the ranger’s exact location in seconds. A structured acknowledge / confirm workflow ensures someone takes responsibility for the response. Two confirmed life-saving SANParks helicopter medical evacuations to date. Beyond emergencies, the same dataset feeds monthly section-ranger reports on patrol coverage, intensity and movement efficiency.
