At Contemplate Wild we are passionate about real-time data being converted into useful information for conservation managers.

This is where it all began for Contemplate Wild! In mid-2016, an entire pack of African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus) died after contracting canine distemper. In response, a vaccination campaign was initiated, during which tracking collars were deployed on each pack of wild dogs.

Technology can never fully replace the importance of having boots on the ground. Rangers play a vital role in conservation operations, operating in hazardous environments where effective communication is crucial.

As we mainly rely on the Sigfox network for ranger and wildlife tracking, we actively contribute to optimizing network coverage in our deployment areas.

Through a collaborative effort with the Endangered Wildlife Trust’s “Eye in the Sky” project, we have established a dedicated monitoring platform designed to receive and analyse real-time data from GPS-tracked vultures.

We are extremely fortunate to collaborate with scientists and engineers at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behaviour (MPIAB) in Konstanz, Germany. The MPIAB team has been working on the development of cutting-edge Internet of Things (IoT) devices, specifically designed for tracking endangered species.

Despite the remarkable efforts by dedicated rangers to combat poaching, unfortunately, instances of poaching still persist. Consequently, rangers and tourists frequently stumble upon maimed or injured animals wounded by gunshots, snares or poisons.
